Pop

Appears in:
Series 1, Series 2, Live at Drury Lane, Series 3

Played By:
Steve Pemberton

Quickie Bio:
A loud, obnoxious, "foreign" man. His two sons, Al and Rich, run his various news stands around Royston Vasey. He fills their heads with sales-mentality quotes like "Principles over pounds" and "DPI equals SIN" - (Determination, plus perspiration, plus inspiration equals success in news agency), but ultimately disowns one of his sons over something as minor as kids stealing nine Maverick bars. He chases off his other son's date (after hitting on her). Along with being a newsagent he's also a landlord and the emcee at the Flaps in Your Lap "Exotic Dance Center" (ie strip club). The flats that he rents are not of the best quality (they're not even of mediocre quality), and he will tell you anything you want to hear just to get you to sign the lease. He enters his properties at will (much to the surprise of his tenants), and has hidden videocameras in each of them (watching toilets, bathtubs, and the bedrooms).

Useless Trivia:
  • Steve asked Jeremy to write a character for him, and the result was Pop. Pop is "foreign", and is very loosely based on a character Steve was portraying in a play the first time Jeremy saw him.
  • Pop's infamous phone number (444-4244) was a real selling-point to Steve and Reece's landlord, Mr. Papalazarou.

    Al

    Appears in:
Series 1, Series 2, Live at Drury Lane

    Played By:
    Mark Gatiss

    Quickie Bio:
Pop's eldest son. He runs some of Pop's news stands. When his little brother, Rich, tells him that a group of boys stole some candybars while he was running the booth, Al makes him tell their father who, in a fit of rage, disowns Rich.

In series two we see Al as he tries to buy a cassette from the Charity Shop (a very frustrating experience), and see what looks to be a sweet little romance between himself and a nurse (Trish) destroyed by his overbearing (and perhaps overly honest) Pop.

    Rich

    Appears in:
Series 1, Live at Drury Lane

    Played By:
    Reece Shearsmith

    Quickie Bio:
Pop's younger son who also runs a news stand. Unfortunately, he tells his brother that some young boys stole candy bars while his back was turned, and his brother makes him tell their father. His father gets quite angry, and disowns Rich.

To me, the best part of the sketch was unfortunately cut for time reasons in Series 1 (although it is on the DVD extras and is on Live at Drury Lane). We learn that Rich was the one who stole the Maverick bars. Why did he do this to himself!?!

    Trish

    Appears in:
    Series 2, Series 3

    Played By:
    Sian Foulkes

    Quickie Bio:
Patricia is a nurse. When we first see her she's dating Al, and goes to have dinner at his (and his father's) home. Pop is far too forward, reveals a bit too much (such as the title of his favorite movie), and makes advances in an attempt to steal Patricia away from Al. Eventually she's had enough and flees the home.

Trish is also Barbara's nurse in Series 3, and is by Geoff Tipps' bedside at the end of the series.

    Useless Trivia:
  • Trish's part in the dinner sketch with Pop and Al was originally played by Reece in the live shows.

    Quickie Bio:
Gary's wife/girlfriend. She's clearly the brainier of the pair, but is ushered aside so Pop can bully Gary into renting the flat. Also performs as the lead in the Royston Vasey production of The Diary of Anne Frank.
